8. The Patient (FX on Hulu)
My score: 70/100
The Patient mostly works for me because its episodes clock in at a tight sitcom length of 20 minutes. The premise—a therapist (Steve Carell) taken captive by a murderous client (Domhnall Gleeson)—isn’t the most inviting, particularly when you factor in that most scenes occur in one room (with scattered flashbacks).
What finally won me over to adding it to my watching schedule, aside from the creepy vibe and decent performances (Gleeson presents a very believable American accent), was my trust in the vision of Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg, producers of The Americans. If they can create one of the best drama series ever made, I’m sure they can bring this “can a serial killer be fixed” series that isn’t Killing Eve in for a successful landing.
